WELCOME TO GUESTHOUSE CASTLE VRBOVEC

Welcome!

Vrbovec Castle with the core of the main building dating from the first half of the 12th Century is situated at the meeting of two rivers; Savinja and Dreta in the town of Nazarje. At Gradišče, the Franciscan Brothers, escaping from Bosnia, built a Franciscan Monastery and the Church of Marijino oznanjenje (Feast of Annunciation) with a marble altar table made by F. Robba.

HISTORY OF THE CASTLE

In the old documents the castle can be found by the German name Altenburg while the Slovenian name Vrbovec is an old Slovenian expression and it means "in the willows." The original castle, built on the rocky bench in the middle of the complex, was built in the first half of the 12th century, and is supposed to have got the present form around 1480. The owners of the castle were as distinguished as the Oglej patriarch, the Vovburg family, the Celje counts, the Habsburg family and then in 1615 it was bought by a Ljubljana diocese and it remained to it until the second World War. In the year 1944, the castle was destroyed by a fire which was set by the partisans. After the war, the castle was partly renovated and then preserved by the Sector for forestry in Nazarje before it could sadly end up in ruins. In between 1988 and 1992 the castle was completely renovated.

Originally, the castle was used as a headquarters of the administration of Oglej territories and then it housed many feudal families and it even used to be a headquarters of local authorities. Before the first World War there was a part of the administration of the diocese which gradually became bigger. In the 30's of the previous century, there was a labourer's shop and for a while a saving bank. Today, there are offices of the Nazarje Community, numerous private enterprises, forestry institutions, a restaurant and a newly opened museum of forestry and timber industry.
